Alzheimer’s disease and aging unfortunately go hand in hand.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is the only top 10 cause of death without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression. And unfortunately there is also very limited funding for research.
They also shared that there are 10.9 million unpaid caregivers and with the increasing number of people aging, this number is only expected to increase.
So often, people are just thrown into a caregiver role. There is no preparation, no course and a great deal of “learning on the job”.
To try and respond to this situation, UCLA has introduced a caregiver bootcamp.
The intention of this program is to try and help caregivers better understand and be able to provide better care when they suddenly find themselves in the role of caregivers.
As Dr. Tan said in the following video, “We are all potential caregivers”.
